Bioarchaeology is the study of human skeletal remains from archaeological sites with an emphasis on reconstructing the life of past populations. It is focused at the population level of analysis rather than the individual level. Through lectures, reading and discussions, students will be exposed to the various areas of inquiry within bioarchaeology such as disease, trauma, physical activity, dietary patterns, indicators of biological stress, and palaeodemography. Students will also learn the theory and methods behinds bioarchaeological research. The subject materials covered in this course is directed toward upper division undergraduates and graduates in Anthropology, and is intended to provide a foundation for students interested in pursuing graduate study and/or careers in bioarchaeology and related fields.

Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to:
a. Think critically about issues regarding skeletal materials in archaeological contexts
b. Understand the methods used in bioarchaeology
c. Understand the biological consequences of environmental changes
a. Students must read all assigned readings before each lecture and are encouraged to actively participate in class discussions.
b. No food or drinks will be allowed in the lectures. All electronic devices must be turned off or switched to silent mode.
c. All assignments/reports must be submitted by the deadlines. Late assignments must be submitted within 3 days after the deadlines, and will only be graded with a maximum of 50%. All other late assignments will be graded zero. If you have any unavoidable reasons (such as medical reasons or family emergencies), please contact your instructor prior to the deadlines.
d. Plagiarism and cheating are unacceptable and intolerable. All assignments and reports must be your own work, and all outside sources must be cited. Any cheating behaviours will receive a grade of zero for that assignment/report and will be reported to the Head of Department.
e. If you have any questions, please come speak with the instructor after lectures or during office hours. Alternatively, emailing is the most efficient way to contact the instructor. All email inquiries will be replied within 1-3 working days. Please use ‘NTU Bioarchaeology’ as the subject to avoid to be treated as junk mails and state your real name, otherwise they will not be responded.

Larsen CS. 2015. Bioarchaeology: Interpreting Behavior from the Human Skeleton. 2nd ed. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

1.
Article Discussion
25%
Each student will present an article that relates to the lecture topic and lead a discussion (10%). Students will sign up for a topic on Week 2 of the class. Each student will write a critique of the article he/she presents in the discussion and submit on the same day (15%). The critique should briefly summarize the article, critique the methods, results and interpretations, and provide a personal opinion to the article. All students should do the reading and take an active part in the discussion as part of your participation grades. *Students must complete all components for credit of the entire work. That is, you are not allowed to skip any steps and still get credit.
2.
Critical Essay
25%
This is a take-home essay. Students will be given two weeks to work on it and submit electronically on the scheduled date.
3.
Research Paper and Presentation
40%
Each student will write a 5000-word research paper (excluded references) and submit by the end of the term (25%). The topic is open but must be relevant to bioarchaeological studies (see ‘Suggested Topics for Research Paper’). Students will deliver Powerpoint presentations on their papers (15-20 mins) to the class on Week 16 and 17 (15%). Classmates will critique presentations with a provided abstract of each paper (as part of participation grades). Graduate students will be allowed to choose to present their current research work (must focus on bioarchaeological themes) and will be expected to produce longer research papers (approximately 8000 words). * Students must complete all components for credit of the entire work. That is, you are not allowed to skip any steps and still get credit.
4.
Class Participation
10%
The evaluation of class participation will be based on attendance and involvement of class discussions.
